Being a parent is challenging, so it helps to have a sense of humor to get you through the days, which is exactly what writer, cartoonist, and mother-of-two Adrienne Hedger does with the hilarious cartoons she creates.
Whether its preparing for a road trip, dealing with teens, or simply trying to prepare dinner, her comics perfectly sum up the comical scenarios that come with the territory of parenthood and actually, adulthood in general.
She had been doing cartoons her whole life for friends and family, but things took a professional turn in 2008, when her and a friend co-wrote three humor parenting books over the course of four years.
Excerpts from the Toddler… book got picked up by a parenting magazine and shared on Facebook, which launched a collaboration with Nickelodeon for their (now closed) site NickMom.
So for the next four years, Shannon and I co-wrote (and I illustrated) three cartoons per week for NickMom, Hedger said.
I also receive great suggestions from readers, she continued. And sometimes Ill collaborate with if I see something theyve written and think, That would make a great cartoon!’
On Sunday, she pulls up that Excel file and looks through the ideas so she can make a plan for the week.
It takes a few hours to do a cartoon sometimes longer if there are a lot of panels or backgrounds.
She said she loves doing the cartoons, but also loves reading the comments on the page, which has more than 84,000 fans.
Often times, readers will share their own funny stories or leave humorous comments that crack me up, she said.
I feel like my Facebook page is a community of awesome, funny people who share a common outlook, she continued.
I want it to be a place where you know youll get a laugh hopefully from the the cartoon itself, and also from the readers who comment.
