If you’ve ever not been in the mood for some sexy time, I’m pretty sure you’ve never been quite as dramatic as the female dragonfly but she’s giving some women a few new ideas.
Researchers from the University of Zurich in Switzerland observed a female moorland hawker dragonfly “crash-dive to the ground while being pursued by a male.
That’s right. She will suddenly play dead mid-flight and crash-dive to the ground in order to avoid the harassment and advances of male dragonflies.
Talk about a buzzkill.
According to researcher Rassim Khelifa,he was surprised by the females behavior and had never before witnessed this in the ten years he has been studying dragonflies.
He noted the females would lie completely still on their backs until the male flew away,” presumably to go get a beer with his buds to try and drown his sorrows.
Khelifa noted that of twenty-sevenplay-dead attempts, twenty-oneof the female dragonflies were successful in getting rid of her male pursuer.
New Scientist reported when they were successful, theyd often act dramatically when theyd emerge.
Which makes sense, seeing as they just launched themselves at a high rate of speed toward the ground and played dead to avoiding unwanted male attention.
Can you imagine if humans did this? Just completely crossed their eyes and threw themselves on the ground to get out of a creepy situation?
Twitter actually kind of likes the idea, which says something about how bad harassment can get at times.
Khelifa also found that the females will often retreat to dense vegetation while laying their eggs probably to hide and act dramatically when they emerge…”
